Mindful Rest Yoga Nidra is a sleep-based practice of meditative self-inquiry. To practice the following introductory recordings, find a comfortable position whether seated or lying down (lying down is preferable). For longer practices you may wish to cover yourself with a blanket .

The Deeply Restorative Practice of Mindful Rest Yoga Nidra

 Mindful Rest Yoga Nidra can be used as a technique to induce deep relaxation, overcome insomnia, reduce the effects of stress, resolve trauma, overcome addictions, anxiety, depression, fear, anger and self-limiting beliefs and patterns.

During Yoga Nidra we become submerged in receptive and eventually deeply meditative states of consciousness and brain wave states. Yoga Nidra is specifically designed to allow you to enter a sleep-like state while remaining consciously alert and awake. In this state we become witness to the nature of our body, thoughts, emotions and beliefs.

In Yoga Nidra, deep relaxation is systematic, there is a conscious release of physical and mental tension. Allowing the body to rest in this receptive state, allows the body's innate ability to induce healing to spontaneously and effortlessly occur. Imagine what your body could do if it could replenish and revitalize itself.

The purpose of Yoga Nidra is to recognize the infinite potential within that is our birthright.

In order to truly realize this innate potential, we must first begin by withdrawing our attention from the world outside of us to the world inside. This is done systematically during Yoga Nidra by withdrawing attention from the outside world of objects, then from the physical body, and the world of inner dimensions such as breath, thoughts, emotions, feelings, images and beliefs.  Through the practice of  dissidentifying from the senses (pratyahara), attention is released from distracting tendencies (dharana), attention is then able to focus and concentrate (dhyana), moving into a state of meditative absorption (samadhi) and ultimately realization of our natural state of peace and equanimity (kaivalya).

Why is Yoga Nidra so Powerful?

In Yoga Nidra, relaxation is systematic; there is a conscious release of physical holding, and mental agitations. This powerful technique, which induces a profound parasympathetic-relaxation response throughout the body, leads to sensitivity to internal feedback cues, and educates the body-mind to enter into a relaxed, receptive state in which healing occurs spontaneously.

The process teaches sensitivity to various bodily states including:

  • Slow, calm and regular heartbeat

  • Slow and rhythmic abdominal breathing

  • Significant levels of alpha brain waves

  • A profound state of deep rest
