Curriculum

The 200 Hour Curriculum includes the components required by Yoga Alliance for certification. In our unique training, we go above and beyond these requirements. We utilize classic yoga lifestyle practices, and not just dynamic postures. Your life is a posture! Therefore, we offer experiential practices, reflection and challenges creating an in-depth personal development.

Yoga Lifestyle

Communication and contemplation are the foundational practices to cultivate authentic relationships with our students and ourselves. This module also encompasses self-inquiry, leadership, ethics, spiritual maturity and guidelines for deepening personal practice.

Yoga Philosophy

Includes an introduction to the history of yoga, Yoga Philosophy, Patanjali's Eight Fold Path of Ashtanga Yoga, the Bhagavad Gita, Chakras, meditation, Sanskrit, mantra, mudra, the Yoga Sutras and more.  In addition, we will hear from some of the contemporary teachers of yoga and yoga philosophy.  Finally, we will compare these philosophies with their parallel in science, and how they support each other.

Yoga Asana

Students will learn to incorporate and teach a methodology of structural and supportive core alignment principles. These key elements lay the groundwork for a practice and knowledge base that is rich with integrity, skill and accuracy for everyone, and especially those individuals with chronic injury/illness.

Posture Study

Learn 28 foundation level postures in-depth, including benefits and contraindications; posture modifications and variations, how to assist (in person and online); a full range of warm-ups and adaptations to support a variety of yoga students.  As well, to understand how to introduce simple movements and awareness in the body, for those who are compromised or marginalized.

Pranayama

Students will learn four yoga foundational breathing practices and how to apply them to a yoga practice. We will also explore how the energy body relates to the breath, and why you would develop a deepening pranayama practice.  Breath is a key foundation for changing the stress response in the body, and we will clearly assess our own breath, and in turn be able to assess and support others.

Anatomy & Physiology

The curriculum covers traditional human anatomy, physiology, kinesiology and applied biomechanics. We will also look at the cardiovascular system, nervous system, digestion and elimination.  In this section, we have an opportunity to solidify the reference information and sources of current research and science.  In addition we will explore the energy body, and how its non-physical components influence our physical body and well being.

Teaching Methodology

The teaching methodology covers: leading stage 1 postures, creating a centering, basic meditation techniques, cultivating spiritual maturity as a yoga teacher, class planning and sequencing, principles of delivery, developing body awareness, how to assist and the philosophy of touch, a Beginner's Series, and variations and adaptations.

Graduation Requirements

What Our Graduates are Saying

The 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training with Mindful Restoration, which I completed in June 2021, exceeded my expectations in every possible way. Sonya and Jeff’s lived experience and breadth of knowledge is incredibly impressive, and their willingness to share this is a gift I am honoured to have received.
The online learning modules, which include videos and audio recordings, were very accessible and the virtual teaching sessions were a great opportunity to connect with fellow students. Our small group of students continues to meet and practice together regularly and this is a testament to the bonds that Sonya and Jeff forged and some of the tools they taught to support us on our yogic journey.
I was looking for an authentic, accessible, and affordable yoga teacher training to support my own practice and students. I found all this and more with Mindful Restoration and I can’t recommend it enough.
— Jo Krebs, 200Hr Online 2021
Jeff & Sonya of Mindful Restoration are 2 of the most incredibly knowledgeable, compassionate, inspiring and gifted practitioners I have the honour of knowing.
For years, my practice has been a deeply personal and protected one. I love the physicality, the form and technique, the ability to become quiet and challenge myself, not anyone else.
I thought I knew the poses..... at times however, it felt I was doing something altogether new!!!! However, the deepest and most profound experience for me, was being gently led to a place of intense self inquiry and discovery.
“Only when I have been somewhere, can I take others safely there”.
If you have ever thought about taking the 200hr Training - either to teach others or just to deepen your own knowledge and practice, I highly recommend Jeff & Sonya at Mindful Restoration.
This course is more than the physical aspects of Yoga as I knew it, it is a tantalising dip in the Ocean of a life lived with conscious intention, movement and an open and loving heart.
— Tracie Sievers, 200 Hour Online YTT 2020
As an Inclusive Education Teacher, over the last few years, I have been interested in introducing mindfulness and yoga practices into my classroom. By fate, when looking up online Yoga Teacher Training courses, I found Mindful Resortation’s online YTT. Little did I know that this was the first step towards a life changing experience.
My heart is filled with so much gratitude and respect for Yoga Masters Sonya and Jeff. They provided me a safe place, which speaks volume to their ability to connect with their students as their compassion and genuine interest in us was evident even online, to embark on a journey of self-discovery. They taught me the importance of “staying on my mat” while riding life’s waves no matter how stormy it gets as the end result is worth the bumpy ride.
Sonya and Jeff’s immense experience and mastery of their craft was evident throughout the training. They encouraged and challenged me to look at my yoga practice as more than just poses I shape my body into on the mat. They guided us towards the magic: acceptance, healing, and growth. I feel incredibly blessed to have learned from two people who are not only passionate about what they teach, but who they teach.
Sonya and Jeff, thank you for this amazing opportunity. I can’t wait to share all of the valuable lessons I have learned with my students!

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there prerequisites for this training?

There are no formal prerequisites, however, we do suggest students have approximately 6 months experience participating in classes, or online, with a certified yoga instructor.

Who is this training for?

This training is designed with all levels and abilities in mind. This is a foundational 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training which will equip you with the skills and tools you need to teach yoga to beginners.

I want to learn more about yoga/myself but not necessarily teach. Should I do this training?

As an integrated practice on and off the mat, this program becomes a catalyst for physical healing, psychological growth, and spiritual awakening. Many students take this training for their own personal development with no intention to teach others. Some of those students have gone on to teach anyway as they awoke a passion to share the transformational potential they received!

What style of yoga is this training based on?

Our roots are in the Kripalu Yoga tradition. Both Jeff and Sonya lived, studied and worked at the acclaimed Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health in western Massachusetts in the late 1990’s. Kripalu Yoga is named after Swami Shri Kripalvanandaji, one of the greatest Shaktipat Kundalini Yoga masters of the past century. Kriplau means compassion. This style of yoga teaches us to direct our focus within and access the body’s wisdom.

What is the refund policy?

Refunds may be issued if a student needs to withdraw from the training program by providing notice to Mindful Restoration at least 5 days before the course begins. View our complete cancellation and refund policy here.

I am a school teacher, or school administrator. How is the training helpful for me?

Due to the challenges in our current environment we are offering an extended discount to teachers, CEA’s, administrators and staff of public and private schools. This training offers curriculum tools to support teachers and staff involved in education. Professional Development credit for participation is often available. In addition to the above curriculum, this training will also cover:

  • Introduction of Take a Breath for Schools and Communities, our in school and community based program which we have offered in the Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, Canada for the past 6 years.  It includes a deep dive in to BRAVE (our methodology acronym), and how it is applied in supporting those dealing with the ill effects of stress and tension in the body/mind. As well, the methodology creates cutting edge performance and potential to move forward in life and lifestyles.

  • AND this program certifies you as a public teacher.  You may work in a yoga studio, open your own!, lead a public class, there are many opportunities.  Many of our graduates (over 650 to date), work in the field and are very respected.  Our training is held in high regard in the yoga community.
